BBC Radio 1 DJ announces birth of first child after 'taking step back' from limelight

BBC Radio 1 DJ Gemma Cairney has taken to social media to announce the arrival of her first child with partner Cameron McAllister.

Radio DJ Gemma Cairney has delighted her followers with the news of her baby's arrival. On Friday, 23 August, the popular Radio 1 and Radio 6 Music presenter took to Instagram to share an adorable snapshot of herself with partner Cameron McAllister and their new bundle of joy at home.

Radiating happiness, Gemma wrote in her heartfelt caption: "TWO WEEKS of the best madness, blessings, bliss, breathes, prayers, tears and momentous delirium. I can't offer enough thanks to our friends/kin, midwives, soothsayers, staunch support!".

She added emotionally: "Never felt love like this. We are a fresh fan of 3, yipeeeeeee."

The announcement sparked a wave of congratulations from fans and fellow celebrities alike. Paloma Faith remarked: "Congratulations you legend! Welcome to a new crazy world," while Annie Lennox expressed her joy with: "Heartfelt congratulations Mama Gemma! ! !"

Celebrities like Pixie Lott, Laura Whitmore, Angela Scanlon, and DJ Emma Wilson also sent their well-wishes. Gemma started her ascent in the entertainment industry working as an assistant fashion stylist for musical artists, then dived into radio broadcasting. She began modestly with Channel 4's 4Radio before seizing the co-presenter's chair on Big Brother's Big Ears alongside Iain Lee in 2008.

The talented Birmingham native didn't stop there; she flourished on KISS FM prior to her big move to the BBC, spinning tracks as a regular DJ beginning in 2014. Besides captivating audiences with multiple radio documentaries, Gemma has established a thriving production company and been at the forefront of the BBC's television coverage for major music festivals like Glastonbury.

Gemma shared her amazement at her career trajectory in an interview with the Guardian: "I still can't believe I was only 23 when I got my first radio gig, co-hosting the Breakfast Show on BBC Radio 1Xtra," she admitted. "I was like an excitable puppy, giggling and overwhelmed. I'd found a craft to learn, which wove together drama school, fashion, music, the art I'd been creating. I'm so excited to know I never have to stop learning. I'm like a slightly older Dora the Explorer: curious and wide-eyed about the future."
