Jeremy Vine has been missing from his Channel 5 show for the past few weeks, and presenters Vanessa Feltz and Matthew Allwright have stepped in to help.

He is set to return to the show next week after enjoying a well-deserved break from presenting during the summer holidays and today the presenter debuted a new look.

Taking to X, Jeremy showed off a short beard he had grown and said: "When you are on the last day of your Summer holiday as a bloke, you always have this issue, right?

"You have the holiday hair, which must be sorted out. But more to the point, who shaves on holidays? I mean, it is not exactly David Bellamy level, and of course, I’m about to shave it off, ready to go back to work.

"But why? Should I shave it off or not? Should I say, ‘I have a beard till Christmas, and by December the 25th, I’m going to look like Santa?'"

In response, one fan commented: "Sorry, Jeremy, definitely shave it off! It does not suit you, and it has to go today! You look so much better and Younger without it. I'm really glad you are back presenting my favourite daytime show. Yes, definitely shave it off today, please."

Another replied: "No one cares, Jezza. Do whatever you like. It will be nice to see you back, though whatshisname has been doing an excellent job." (sic)

A third remarked: "My mum thinks he should shave I think he should keep."

Meanwhile, Jeremy had some bad news for Eggheads fans as she admitted he 'hadn't heard anything' about a new series 'for a while now'.

After BBC dropped the Eggheads, Vine took over as sole host when the series transferred to Channel 5 in 2021. Since the last episode aired in 2023, the show might not be seen on screens.

Jeremy did nothing to dispel the rumours, as he admitted that Channel 5 bosses had not told him anything about a new series.

He told The Mirror earlier this year: "“I haven't heard anything about Eggheads for a while now. I think I have done about 1,200 shows - but whether we are doing any more I don't know.

"We last filmed an episode over a year ago. It may well be we are doing it in 30 years' time, who knows, but no immediate plans for any more.”

It was announced at the end of May that Jeremy is making a major career change away from TV.

The star revealed his obsession with Agatha Christie inspired his first murder mystery novel Murder On Line One.

It will be published by HarperCollins next year and focuses on a Devon-based local radio host turned sleuth Edward Temmis.

The first book, part of a series, follows Edward as he meets Stevie, a woman whose gran was a devoted listener but recently died in suspicious circumstances.
