Tyler Perry's six word reason for helping Harry and Meghan before he met them
Filmmaker Tyler Perry rushed to the aid of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle after they stepped down from the royal family, despite never having met them.
When Prince Harry and Meghan Markle stepped down from the royal family in 2020, they turned to someone they had never even met.
Tyler Perry, 54, went from being a total stranger to a close enough friend that he was named the godfather of one of their children in the space of three years. The American filmmaker, without having met the couple in person, generously offered his Beverly Hills mansion as a sanctuary for them after they moved to California.
Speaking on the Let's Talk Off Camera with Kelly Ripa podcast last year, Tyler opened up about taking them in after they walked away from royal duties.
"It is very important for people in this business to have a safe place to land, to have a place where they can trust and talk freely and get advice that’s not going to be biased or from somebody who wants something from them," he told Kelly Ripa.

Tyler revealed that he had first reached out by sending the couple a note for their wedding, saying that he "got the tremendous sense" that things were "overwhelming, especially for Meghan.
He said: “I sent them a note … and just said, ‘If you ever need anything, I’m here,’ and she called months later and just talked to me like I was a therapist you talk to and we just had a great conversation."
Speaking to The Cut in 2022, Meghan, 43, discussed how she turned to Tyler for help. "Sometimes, you can tell your life story to a stranger on a plane as opposed to some of the people that are closest to you," she said.

He arranged for a private jet to take the family to Southern California and offered his Beverly Hills home to them. "They hid out at my house for a long time," he told Kelly.
In the Oprah interview, Meghan said: "We needed a house and he offered security as well. So it gave us breathing room to try to figure out what we are going to do."
Tyler appeared on the Sussexes tell-all Netflix series in 2022 where he shared the reason why he chose to help them. "They just wanted to be free," he said, adding: "They wanted to be free to love and be happy. I applauded that.
