Forgotten Wimbledon victor, Virginia Wade, salutes Andy Murray
VIRGINIA WADE has spoken out over being the “forgotten” champion of British tennis but says there are no hard feelings and she “salutes” Andy Murray, who was heralded the first British player in 77 years to win Wimbledon on Sunday
Virginia Wade doesn't hold a grudge against Andy Murray
Wade’s victory in the women’s singles in 1977 was largely forgotten even by David Cameron during Prime Minister’s Questions this week.
I definitely salute and congratulate Murray
But now Virginia, 68, the only British woman to win titles at all four Grand Slam tournaments, tells Page Six: “There is such hyperbole over the well-deserved win for Andy and I don’t want to try to get in on the act.
“I think he did fantastically well and knowing how hard it is to get that win at Wimbledon for a Brit, I definitely salute and congratulate him.
“At least now the pressure is over.”
