The X Factor boss found out he was going to be a father last year (13) following an on/off relationship with Lauren Silverman, and although the news came as a surprise, Cowell is glad for the change in his life because it lifted him out of a low.
He tells The Sun newspaper, "There were times last year when I would live in two rooms - my kitchen and bedroom. It is a weird existence when you live on your own. You're on the phone all night long, too obsessed with things.
"Now the house has become a home rather than a house. I think in a weird way I probably needed that. You can start to live a slightly abnormal life and there is no question of a doubt I was heading down that path."
When asked if he was depressed, Cowell adds, "I mean I knew it myself. You are always looking for the next high from the show - and if you haven't got anyone to share it with - or a family around you - I think you can go a bit nuts."
