Royal Wedding: William and Kate seem heart-warmingly happy
IT was really sweet to see William and Kate on their first joint royal walkabouts. She looked terrific, he looked a bit shy but very proud of her. And they both seemed heart-warmingly happy.
But I’m getting a bit confused about Kate’s name. Why does she now want to be called Catherine when for years as William’s girlfriend we’ve known her as Kate? Of course Catherine is her given name but we all feel so much more affectionate towards a Kate. Would Kate Winslet be as deeply rooted in the British bosom if she were known as chilling, haughty Catherine?
It’s baffling because in their post-engagement interview, William called her “Kate”. But when they visited St Andrews University, he referred to her as “Catherine”. Is she being encouraged to be, well, more regal?
If so, it’s a mistake. Queen Elizabeth I was known affectionately to the masses as “Good Queen Bess”. Prince Harry was christened Henry – but Harry is so much more approachable. And William’s mother was called Princess Di throughout her marriage. People loved her.
I think however much the royals refer to the new bride as Catherine, she will be forever known to the rest of us as Princess Kate.
