Fuel taxes must be cut

IT cannot make sense to allow the tax system to turn the cost of fuel into an insuperable obstacle standing in the way of otherwise good business propositions.

But that is the state of play with petrol now averaging £1.28p a litre and diesel more than £1.32p and the vast majority of those prices being accounted for by fuel duty and VAT.

Treasury Chief Secretary Danny Alexander has wangled a duty discount for those living in his constituency and elsewhere in the Scottish Highlands.

The whole nation is crying out for a similar break.
