Some pension progress
GETTING more people to save into pension plans is difficult enough at the best of times. Doing so during a living-standards squeeze is even harder.
So news that a million workers have started saving into company schemes thanks to the Government’s new “auto?enrolment” measures is to be thoroughly welcomed. Most of the new savers may be putting away only modest sums but that is much better than putting away nothing.
As in so many areas of our national life, the failure of the last Labour government to take prudent action during the good times has stored up huge difficulties. Coalition ministers are to be commended for addressing them.
