Why Michael is here to stay
HAVING talked of quitting his native Blighty only a few months back, it’s heartening to hear that national treasure Sir Michael Caine now intends to stay put after all.
Sir Michael, 76, caused a stir in the spring when he suggested a further tax hike could lead to him having to leave the UK. Thankfully, the veteran actor, who is as English as bangers and mash, appears to have had a welcome change of heart, insisting he wants to be here to see his grandchildren grow up.
The star already has one grandson, Taylor, by his youngest daughterNatasha, who is also due to give birth to twins later this month. “Being a grandad is my best role yet,” he says. “As a dad of two daughters, I never had a son. So Taylor has been a double whammy. It’s as if he’s both my grandson and my son. He also looks like me. So am I going to walk out on him and two more grandchildren for the sake of 10 per cent of my income? No chance.”
WHY MICHAEL IS HERE TO STAY
Sir Michael, whose latest well-received film, Is Anybody There? is released on DVD later this month, remains no fan of the current chancellor, however. “It’s all very silly,” he insists. “We have three-and-a-half million unemployed and he’s saying to employers ‘you’d better get out’. They never learn.”
