June Whitfield: middle class is funny
ACTRESS June Whitfield has hit out at the new boss of BBC1 after he called for more working-class sitcoms.
June, 85, who has starred in such hits as Absolutely Fabulous and Hancock’s Half Hour, reckons new controller Danny Cohen, 36, was wrong to call for more “blue collar” shows.
“The BBC say we need more working-class comedies, which is rubbish,” said June, who was speaking at the National Theatre. “We need funny comedies, it doesn’t matter where they come from. It’s just as bad to rant about the middle class as it is the working class.”
