Hollywood star’s directorial debut based on terrifying true story teased by Netflix

Pitch Perfect star directs and stars a chilling new crime drama on Netflix based on a horrifying true story from the 1970s.

Woman of the Hour: Official teaser trailer

Netflix has just launched the first trailer for an upcoming film directed by Anna Kendrick in her directorial debut.

Woman of the Hour follows Cheryl Bradshaw (played by Anna), whose life intersects with a serial killer known as ‘The Dating Game Killer’ when she becomes a contestant on the popular dating show.

Murderer Rodney Alcala (Daniel Zovatto) had already killed five women when he appeared on the show in 1978, landing himself a date with bachelorette Cheryl.

The new trailer begins with Cheryl and Rodney on an awkward date in a dive bar that soon takes on a threatening aura.

When Cheryl is slightly baffled by a compliment likening her to Patti Smith, Rodney slams his drink down and ominous music begins to play.

Rodney asks, “How do you feel right now?”, to which Cheryl, nonplussed, replies: “Fine.”

He asks for another round of drinks, but Cheryl surreptitiously shakes her head at the waitress.

Later, when they leave, her date offers to walk her home but Cheryl tries to set off ahead of him.

Rodney then calls her back to ask for her number, which Cheryl had already given to him, but he insists: “I just want to make sure I have the right one.”

He begins to get angry, asking her, “You can’t repeat it from memory?” and the trailer ends with a sinister shot of Cheryl turning and leaving while Rodney stalks her from behind.

The gripping trailer was released to YouTube today (September 17), where many eager crime and movie fans took to the comments to share their excitement for the upcoming release.

“Based on the serial killer Rodney Alcala. This is going to be such an interesting movie, can't wait!” one user said.

“They had me with Anna the actor,” a second replied. “I am staying for Anna the director. Time to shine double time next month.”

Another Anna admirer added: “Oh Anna! My breath, it is gone. You've taken it away.”

And many others remarked how refreshing it was to see a trailer which doesn’t give away the entire storyline.

“A trailer for the first time in so many years without revealing the entire movie,” one impressed fan commented.

Woman of the Hour will be released Friday, October 18 on Netflix.
