CD Review: Tift Merritt, Travelling Alone
THERE is a passionate intensity about Tift Merritt's music and a sweetness to her voice that has long prompted comparisons with Joni Mitchell, particularly on slower pieces such as Drifted Apart (on which her duettist Andrew Bird sounds like Roy Orbison).
Merritt is slightly less convincing on the faster material although To Myself, which seems to echo the riff from Bruce Springsteen's Dancing In The Dark, is excellent as is the slow-building Spring.
Fans of sharp, literate songwriting will find much to admire here.
