A drink a day risks shakes
DOWNING just three alcoholic drinks a day can double the risk of developing the "shakes" in later life, scientists warned yesterday.
Even drinking just one in two units daily - well within NHS guidelines for men and women - raised the risk by 30 per cent, a joint US-Spanish study found.
Researchers believe alcohol, a brain toxin, may lower the threshold for tremors to develop.
Professor Ian Gilmore, president of the Royal College of Physicians, said: "Mental disorders account for most alcohol-related hospital admissions, but insufficient attention is paid to alcohol misuse and neurological illness.
"This shows how important it is to stay within recommended limits and to adopt a few alcohol-free days a week."
