Neanderthals
Neanderthals were a distinct species of human, called Homo neanderthalensis. They lived from about 400,000 to 40,000 years ago across Europe and southwest and central Asia. According to the Natural History Museum, "current evidence from both fossils and DNA suggests that Neanderthal and modern human lineages separated at least 500,000 years ago. Some genetic calibrations place their divergence at about 650,000 years ago." Some humans are believed to have inherited around 2% Neanderthal DNA.
