A mechanic and owner of a service garage has shown how drivers can easily chip their windscreen while replacing wiper blades.
This technician, Sherwood Jr., notes that he’s guilty of this car maintenance mistake, which cost him $1,200 (£1,500) in repairs.
In a TikTok clip for his garage, Royalty Auto Service (@royaltyautoservice), Sherwood Jr. says that drivers of any vehicle can make this pricey mistake while changing windscreen wipers.
Sherwood Jr. instructs viewers never to leave the spring-loaded metal arm that houses a wiper blade in an upward position, as it can automatically swing downward and crack the car’s windscreen.
In his video, this mechanic placed a large book under the spring-loaded metal arm to exercise additional caution.

Sherwood Jr. said: “I bought a $1,200 windshield on a Volvo once because that thing [spring-loaded metal arm] was hitting up, it fell down, and it just cracked the entire windshield.”
The video’s camera operator, Sherwood III, the garage’s service advisor, noted: “This is such a simple thing, but you’d be surprised how many techs in here that leave them open.”
In his clip, Sherwood Jr. joked: “You notice I’m not taking my hand off it because that [$1,200 windshield repair] was a very painful experience.

Sherwood Jr. emphasised that you should monitor anyone you hire to install your wiper blades to ensure they don’t leave the metal arm upward.
He explains that this monitoring is more vital than ever, given the expensive technology automakers install in new car windscreens, such as cameras.
