A motoring expert has highlighted a commonly-overlooked way drivers create extra drag with their cars and reduce fuel efficiency amid petrol increasing 10p per litre so far this year.
Darren Miller, an auto industry pro, emphasises the significance of keeping your vehicle clean, as dirt can add extra weight and lower mileage.
Miller of BigWantsYourCar.com said: “Studies have shown the benefits of a clean car, with potential fuel savings of up to two miles per gallon.
“When dirt and grime coat the exterior of your vehicle, they disrupt airflow around it, forcing the engine to work harder to overcome this resistance.
“By keeping your car clean, you reduce aerodynamic drag, allowing your vehicle to run more efficiently and use less fuel for the same journey.”

Miller continued: “Dirt also adds unnecessary weight to the vehicle, further compromising fuel efficiency.
“Each layer of dirt clinging to your car adds to its overall weight, requiring more energy to propel it forward.
“By regularly washing your vehicle and removing accumulated dirt, you not only enhance its appearance but also lighten its load, leading to improved fuel economy and lower operating costs.”

However, this isn’t the only way drivers can go above and beyond to save money filling up their cars.
Experts also recommend changing schedules to combine separate trips into longer ones to reduce engine strain and consume less fuel.
ATS Euromaster explained: “When you do short trips, the engine doesn’t have a chance to reach its ideal operating temperature and therefore consumes more fuel. Where possible, planning ahead could save you lots of time in traffic, which, in turn, will also save you fuel.
“Avoid travelling during rush hour where you can and, if this isn’t possible, look for alternate routes that avoid major congestion.”
