Service histories help establish a pre-owned car’s resale value, so prospective buyers should always be able to access them.

Darren Miller from BigWantsYourCar.com said: “Vehicles with a detailed service history, indicating regular maintenance at prescribed intervals, typically sell for more and reassure potential buyers about the vehicle’s condition and reliability.”

Miller added: “Cars with incomplete service histories often raise concerns for prospective buyers, suggesting possible hidden issues from inconsistent maintenance.

“This uncertainty can reduce buyer interest and offers, ultimately lowering the vehicle’s selling price. Maintaining a complete and up-to-date service record is key to preserving the car’s value.”

Your vehicle’s owner’s manual will specify when your car is due for maintenance, like oil changes.

Most new vehicle purchases come with a service booklet stamped by the dealership’s garage after work is complete.

However, many car manufacturers store their customers' service histories digitally to help those without an organised service booklet record.

Motorists can additionally complete their vehicle’s service history by contacting the car’s previous owner, if applicable, viewing its MOT history, and contacting prior garages or dealerships.

Miller said: “Regular servicing is important even for cars driven less frequently, as it helps avoid potential mechanical problems.

“Keeping up with these recommendations helps keep your vehicle in top condition, boosting its longevity and resale value.”

If a potential buyer comes to evaluate your car, a Bristol Street Motors spokesperson recommends that sellers always have relevant documents, like service history, in hand.

Bristol Street Motors said: “Collating all the official paperwork for your car can be a very time-consuming process, delaying when the money can be transferred into your bank account.

“To expedite this process, prepare as much of this documentation as possible ahead of any potential sale.”
