As the mercury rises and summer makes its grand entrance, UK motorists are increasingly reaching for that blissful AC button to fend off the heat while driving.

The air conditioning system is a godsend during those sweltering long drives, offering a cool respite from the outside world. However, it's all too common for the AC to lose its power, often when you least expect it, leaving you with nothing but a weak breeze and, worse, an unpleasant odour if the fluid depletes.

To combat this issue, one savvy woman has taken to TikTok to share her ingenious yet cost-effective solution. The user, known as @master_driver666, divulged her trick in a viral video which racked up 60,000 likes, promising to eliminate that "peculiar smell in your car".

She said: "If there is a smell in the car when we turn on the air conditioner and the refrigeration effect is not good, in this case we open the passenger side armrest box."

Detailing the steps, the woman continued: "When you open it, there's a switch, let's hold it down, then you'll see the armrest box falls off by itself. Next let's hold this button, pull it upwards, we can see the air conditioning filter element."

Upon removing the filter, she exclaimed: "Oh my God, look how dirty it is, no wonder the air conditioner smells bad! We only need to spend a meal to buy a filter element of the same model.

"After install it back in the same way as you took it out. Fasten the lid, install the armrest box, following this method we can replace the air conditioning filter ourselves."

Since she shared the clip it has garnered a lot of attention online. One said: "Wow, you are now my new best friend!" While another added: "Great notes to give, thank you!"

Over the weekend, police will be looking out for drivers flouting the Highway Code, particularly the little-known Rule 169. This rule focusses on motorists causing long traffic queues, a sight often seen at the long bank holiday weekends.

People who drive campervans – especially vintage models – need to be aware that breaching this rule could land them a £5,000 fine and between three and nine points on your licence.

Drivers are also being told to check their licence before hopping in a campervan – in case they don't have the right permissions.
