The motoring blog ReDriven has given motorists a number of tips that can help them reduce the amount their vehicle depreciates.

Whilst it is inevitable that all cars will lose value from the moment that they are driven off the dealership forecourt, some simple considerations can help drivers get thousands more when they sell their used vehicle.

A spokesperson for ReDriven suggested that drivers can prevent heavy depreciation by making sure their car is serviced regularly.

They advised: "Not to state the obvious, but consistent and thorough servicing is crucial for keeping a vehicle in top condition. This goes beyond the basic oil change or tyre rotation; it's about a holistic approach to vehicle care.

"Regular servicing should include engine checks, brake inspections, and ensuring all fluids are at optimal levels. This not only keeps the car running smoothly but also helps in identifying potential issues before they become major problems."

Generally, there are three different types of services, with cars typically undergoing interim work every six months or 6,000 miles. During an interim service, components such as air filters are generally replaced and a number of checks are made to make sure the mechanicals are running smoothly.

However, most vehicles will also need a full service once a year or every 12,000 miles, in which the oil and various perishable components are replaced.

Whilst it may seem trivial, making sure that all servicing is completed on time can help drivers prevent severe faults from developing that could lower the value of their car.

ReDriven's spokesperson also suggested that, when getting their car serviced, inspected or repaired, they should keep all documentation in a pouch, helping future buyers know the vehicle's history.

They explained: "Keeping detailed records of all maintenance and repairs can significantly increase your vehicle’s resale value.

"This documentation acts as a report card for your car, showcasing the care and investment you have put into maintaining it. These records should include dates of services, descriptions of the work done, and any parts replaced."

Finally, the spokesperson for ReDriven advised motorists to keep the interior is clean as possible, which can prevent stains from ruining the image of the car.

They added: "The condition of a car’s interior is often a direct reflection of its overall maintenance. Regular cleaning of the interior is essential. Use quality cleaning products to treat and protect leather seats, and ensure fabric seats are free of stains and odours.

"Non-smoking cars generally fetch a higher resale value, as the absence of smoke odours and stains makes them more appealing to a broader range of buyers."
