Motorists could be fined up to £120 for making a major error while driving in Europe on holiday this summer.

Experts at LeaseCar.UK warned motorists have to display a "national identifier" sticker on their vehicles at all times, with hefty fines for those caught breaking the driving law.

It means British tourists travelling on the continent must have a UK sticker clearly displayed on the back of their vehicle

A sticker may not be needed in all European countries if the vehicle’s number plate has a Union Jack identifier.

These stickers can be purchased for as little as £2 ahead of a trip and will save motorists the hassle of splashing out hefty fees while trying to enjoy their holiday.

LeaseCar.UK explained: "If your car is registered in the UK, it’s a requirement to display a 'national identifier' in the form of a sticker.

"There’s no need to do this if your number plate has a new UK identifier with the Union Jack, but you will need one if your number plate has the old GB identifier without a flag, the EU flag, or the flag of England, Scotland or Wales.

"In Spain, Malta or Cyprus where this law is treated in stricter regard - so it’s important to still purchase a rear sticker no matter what your number plate shows.

"Not having the correct identifier could mean you receive an on-the-spot fine of up to £120, depending on the country you’re in."

GOV.UK has confirmed drivers will need to display a UK sticker clearly on the rear of their vehicle if the number plate has a GB identifier with the Union flag or a Euro symbol.

A sticker will also be required if a plate has a national flag of England, Scotland or Wales or has numbers and letters only with no flag or identifier.

According to LeaseCar, failure to follow the rules will land road users with a £120 (€140) fine in Spain.

Punishments vary between countries, with those breaking the rules in France likely to face a £115 (€135) charge.

Germany is slightly more lenient but being caught out will still see drivers issued an on-the-spot £85 (€100) penalty.

GOV.UK added: "If you’re in Spain, Cyprus, or Malta, you must display a UK sticker no matter what is on your number plate.

"You do not need a UK sticker or identifier to drive in Ireland."
