REVEALED: Where you're most likely to get off a speeding ticket in the UK
POLICE forces issue speeding tickets and fines at differing frequencies in Britain. Here is where the most fines are issued, which councils are most and least likely to overturn a fine and a number of defences drivers can use.
Research from 2016 revealed that it is a postcode lottery in terms of which drivers are most likely to be fined for speeding.
Speeding tickets are issued in varying frequencies across different police forces in Britain.
New research released earlier this year by UK Carline revealed what areas that issued the most speeding tickets during 2017.
West Yorkshire police issued the most speeding tickets over the course of last year with a whopping 142,610 handed to drivers.
This is almost 80,000 more than any other police force in Britain with the second highest frequency of fines handed out by a police force being Surrey with 62,623 issued.
The top ten police forces that issued the most speeding tickets during 2017 were:
1. West Yorkshire – 142,610
2. Surrey – 62,623
3. West Mercia – 62,503
4. Dundee – 60,465
5. North Wales – 57,224
6. Kent – 53,590
7. Lancashire – 51,455
8. Humberside – 49,982
9. Norfolk – 49,730
10. Dorset - 45,344
Research from 2016 revealed the councils most and least likely to overturn a speeding fine in the UK:
Top 5
Met Police - 17.4 per cent
Northants - 16.8 per cent
Greater Manchester - 13.6 per cent
Merseyside - 11 per cent
Leicestershire - 9.9 per cent
Bottom 5
Sussex - 0.4 per cent
Cleveland - 1.3 per cent
Durham - 2.1 per cent
Cumbria - 3.9 per cent
Norfolk - 4.8 per cent
Drivers can appeal for speeding fines if they believe that they are not at fault for a speeding offence or they believe that there has been an error.
These are the five acceptable defences you can use to appeal for a speeding fine:
-You weren't speeding
-It wasn't you driving when the speeding offence happened
-There wasn't proper notice of the speed limit
-The speeding vehicle caught on camera has been misidentified
-Your car was stolen
Drivers must be able to provide evidence to prove one of these defences to achieve a successful appeal.
Chances are fairly slim for drivers to have a successful appeal.
According to research from 2016, around only one per cent of speeding tickets are contested and only around half of these are actually successful.
