Food storage is something that is always on our minds especially when it comes to the cost of living crisis at the moment.

While many of us are penny-pinching and trying to keep food bills as low as possible, it is no wonder people are trying to ensure their food and drink items keep fresher for longer.

And one person has asked for advice on the online forum site Reddit about storing milk.

In a thread titled: How do you store box milk for longer?

The post stated: “I can never seem to finish the box of milk. Once I open it, use it, few days to a week, it's bloated.

“Granted, I don't use milk often but...Is it where is stored in the fridge (bottom of fridge door)? Does it need an air-tight bottle?”

People took to the thread to share their advice and milk storage suggestions, with one person writing: “Pour part of the milk in a separate container and freeze it. When you thaw it, it will have tiny bits of the milk solids, but a good shake makes it better and you have much less waste.

"Also, you can use sour milk in pancakes and biscuits and other things.”

Another added: “You should always store milk in the coldest part of your fridge and never on the door. You can also freeze milk you don’t use in ice cube trays and once frozen pop into freezer bags and use as needed.”

A third commented: “When I lived alone I had the same problem. But where I live they have half-litres so I would just buy those. Any chance those are a thing where you live?

A user said: “This is why I switched to almond milk. It lasts over a month in the fridge.”

A fifth commented: “After opening? Never heard of that. I know the packs are often UHT (Ultra heat treated, ultra-pasteurized) and can sit shelf stable for a long time, but have never known Almond milk to last for a month after opening! Max I've seen is 7 days."

Another advised: “Add a pinch of salt for longer-lasting milk.”

Finally, another simply recommended: “Freeze it in a storage bag.”
