Avocados: The nutritional benefits of fruit explained

Vivid green, ultra creamy and rich, avocados are a fruit with so many delicious uses in recipes.

Whether you’re whipping up some guacamole or planning to top your toast or sandwich, you’re going to need a ripe avocado.

Like bananas, avocados finish ripening after they’ve been picked - that’s why you’ll often find them rock-hard at the supermarkets and they tend to take several days to soften up.

Getting the timing right so that you have ripe avocado ready to go on your timeline can be tricky.

But it doesn’t have to be if households follow a 10-minute tip from @freshlysnapped on TikTok.

The TikTok user captioned the video: “Nothing like a quick bake sesh in the oven to get that avocado to perfection. Never live with an underripe avocado again.”

The food hack expert started by wrapping an unripe avocado in foil and placing it in the oven on a baking tray.

The user recommended households set their oven to 200 degrees for 10 minutes.

Once the time was up, the avocado was left to cool before the expert sliced it open with ease.

Showing the camera the inside of the avocados, it appeared to be soft and perfect in colour.

Alternatively, households can keep their avocados stored in a brown paper bag, however, the process will be longer - around two to three days.

Avocados release ethylene as they ripen. By placing them in a closed brown paper bag, you are trapping the ethylene which concentrates its effects and helps speed up ripening.

This is especially effective if you set the paper bag on a sunny windowsill.

If you’re not ready to use your avocado once it has reached peak ripeness, move it from the counter to the fridge. The cold environment helps temporarily hold it at its peak.

Stored whole, ripe avocados will stay fresh in the fridge drawer for two to three days.
