Nothing worse than buying a big bag of carrots only to discover they have gone slimy or mouldy, wasting your money and spoiling your dinner.

However, there is an incredibly simple way to store carrots in the fridge that will help keep them fresh for weeks and help you save some money on your food shopping.

Kate Fenwick, a food waste expert, has shared that the key to storing carrots is to cover them properly, as the harsh cold environment in the fridge can damage them which makes the vegetable spoil quickly.

She said: “Did you know the best way to store carrots to make them last way longer is to use an airtight container and keep them in the fridge?

“They also say to put a paper towel in the bottom of it, but if you want to go zero waste just use a tea towel.”

“Basically, you put [your towel] in, pop your carrots inside the container and then seal them up, chuck them in the fridge.”

“You’ll find that these carrots will still be exactly the same as the day you bought them for up to six weeks.”

Carrots have a high water content which means they are more susceptible to bacteria and an airtight container acts as a protective barrier to keep them fresh.

They also release moisture over time, which creates a damp environment and causes them to spoil and go mouldy, so a tea towel abords the water and reduces the humidity to stop carrots from spoiling before their time.

In Kate’s comment section, many people were impressed by the food storage method and said it worked very well for them.

One user said: “I only found this out recently, I used to get back spots on them after only a week!”

Another person said: “I tried this method with the tea towel and it works! Better than the water method.”

The water method to store carrots involves filling a mason jar with water, cutting carrots into snackable sizes and then storing them in the jar. It also helps keep them at a constant temperature and moisture level to keep them fresh.

If you have any carrots which seem like they are about to expire you can also try using them to make a quick and easy cake, which is a delicious way to help prevent food waste.
