Stop cats from pooing in your garden with ‘very cheap’ to make homemade spray
Cats are beloved pets but local neighbourhood felines have a habit of digging up plants and ruining lawns, but luckily there is a ‘simple' and natural way to stop them.
Gardening expert gives tips on deterring pets and pests
Cats are naturally curious animals who love to explore new areas, and you can easily keep them out of your garden for good with an easy-to-make homemade spray.
It can be frustrating to spend ages tending to your beloved plants only for a neighbourhood cat to dig up your flowerbeds or foul all over the lawn, as no one wants to clean up the mess of someone else’s pet.
George, a gardening expert from Primrose, has shared that the best way to keep cats out of your garden permanently is to “get creative” and make a homemade cat deterrent spray.
This spray is “simple” and “very cheap” to make according to George as it can be made with ingredients you likely already have stored in your kitchen.
Using a homemade remedy to keep cats away is usually very effective as these mischievous felines have a strong sense of smell which makes them very sensitive to certain fragence, meaning they will likely stay away from areas with scents they find overwhelming.
How to make a homemade spray to keep cats away from your garden
You will need:
- Lemon juice
- White vinegar
- Rosemary
George said: “Mix together lemon juice, rosemary and white vinegar – three things cats detest.
“Put the liquid in a spray bottle so it’s easy to use around the garden. Simply spray near where the cats spend time – on planters, the patio, or even inside.”

Citrus smells such as lemons, oranges and limes are one of the best ways to deter cats as they contain limonene and linalool, which are toxic to cats if ingested.
The smell is not only unpleasant for cats but can trigger an instructive aversion in them, which can signal an area is potentially dangerous so they will avoid it.
This natural method is an effective way to keep cats away from your garden while also being safe to use around your plants, cheap to make and cruelty-free for the animals.
George said: “A cat’s sense of smell is 40 times more effective than a human’s, which is why these scented options work so well.
“If you’re using one of the spray methods, make sure to reapply after each rainfall has washed the previous effort away.”
