Lavender will bloom abundantly if given simple homemade fertiliser before summer

There is nothing more striking than lavender overflowing with blooms, and you can get incredible flowers this summer with an easy-to-make homemade fertiliser.

Gardening tips: Expert on how to grow lavender at home

Lavender will grow quickly when fed the right fertiliser, but you do not need to spend lots of money to have a beautiful and fragrant garden.

Teca Thompson, a gardener from EHowGarden has shared that you can get a fast-growing and blooming lavender plant by feeding it a homemade three-ingredient feed you can make at home in only five minutes.

It is best to give lavender an additional boost now by applying a light fertiliser before summer arrives to give it the necessary nutrients to grow vibrant and abundant flowers

Teca said: “Lavender is very hearty and its beautiful herbs and it grows pretty wild in my garden in several different spots.

“It doesn’t really need much but once a year around springtime I like to kind of rejuvenate it and give it a little boost.”

All you need is a small amount of compost, bonemeal and lime for plants which you buy at your local gardening store.

This homemade fertiliser will help improve the soil of the lavender while also feeding it calcium, which keeps the plants healthy and phosphorus which helps flower production.

Teca said: “What you want to do is take a little bucket and put equal parts compost, bonemeal and lime.

“Just mix it up and this will really give it a boost adding lots of good minerals and nutrients it needs.”

Once the fertiliser is ready, take a garden trowel and mix it well into the base soil of the lavender plant, which makes sure the nutrients reach the roots.

This also helps aerate the soil so make it is not compact, as loose soil helps prevent waterlogging and makes sure oxygen is reaching the roots.

After feeding your lavender plant it will have a much-needed boost to grow lush blocks quickly this summer, but make sure to also water the plant after fertilising it.

Teca said: “We’re gonna give it some water because we want it to soak down into the roots so those nutrients and food can start working and doing their magic.

“After you work it in, you’re going to water it generously and it will be rejuvenated and good to go.”
