Roses are popular to have in your garden this time of year due to their magnificent summer blooms, and there is a simple way to get these flowers looking as beautiful as possible.

Kristi Stone, a farmer and founder of Stone Family Farmstead has shared that banana peels are one of the most effective ways to give all plants in your garden a boost and you can turn it into a “simple” organic fertiliser to get healthier roses this summer.

She said: “Most plants need a certain amount of these top three macronutrients: nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium.

“While there are TONS of different ways to get nitrogen to your vegetable garden, there are fewer to boost potassium. Banana peels can help with that, and banana peel fertiliser is so easy to make.”

Roses will greatly benefit from a potassium boost as the nutrient helps plants move water, which is incredibly important in the hotter temperatures and it is also used during flower production to produce bigger and lusher blooms.

One easy way to use banana peels is to simply bury them around the base of your roses, which will break down over time to slowly feed them potassium as well as give them a nitrogen boost.

However, this method is best not used if you have neighbourhood cats or foxes near your garden, and instead, it is best to turn your bananas into a fertiliser.

Kristi said: “Banana peels can be buried whole near potassium-loving plants if there will be no issue with creatures digging them up.

“However, whenever there is something to break down in the garden, nitrogen is depleted. If your plants have a good source of nitrogen already, then there is no problem burying a banana peel.”

How to make a banana peel fertiliser for roses

You will need:

  • Banana peels
  • Water
  • Mason jars with a lid

All you have to do is add one banana peel to one jar and fill it with water. Tightly sear the jar and leave it to sit for around a week before feeding the water contents to your roses.

Kirsti said: “Once it’s finished, use all of this fertiliser on one or two plants. Throw the peel into the compost pile, or throw it away.

“If you noticed a potassium deficiency in your plants, take note of that, and any changes that happen within a few days.”

Feed roses a banana peel fertiliser every two to four weeks throughout the summer to help get healthier and more vibrant blooms throughout the season.
