Five houseplants which will ‘thrive’ in your bathroom and keep mould at bay
Introducing houseplants into the bathroom not only looks good, but according to experts, it can also contribute to reduced moisture levels and improved air quality.
Adding houseplants into the bathroom not only reduces the risk of mould, but they can also help to reduce toxins in the home.
According to the experts at Big Bathroom Shop, there are five plants which will “thrive” in high humidity.
This includes a cactus, with its ability to survive in hot, humid environments.
The experts noted: “Whilst this low maintenance plant requires at least six hours of sunlight a day, they don’t require direct sunlight, meaning you can place them wherever you like to bring an urban feel to your bathroom as long as there is a source of natural light.”
Aloe vera plants are aesthetic and have great skin-healing properties, making them a great plant to place in the bathroom.

Unlike some other houseplants, the placement of aloe vera is key for a long, healthy life.
They need to be placed on a windowsill as they need plenty of sunlight, but otherwise, they are very easily maintained.
They don’t need too much water or attention but do keep an eye on how dry the soil is to prevent it from drying out too much.
The experts also recommended ivy which they claimed is one of the “easiest” plants to keep, especially in the bathroom.

They explained: “They enjoy warm, humid environments, so they are great for shower rooms.
“They also don’t need too much sunlight and can survive well within the shade, making them ideal for those with windowless bathrooms, or those with smaller windows, unlike many other houseplants.
“Ivy can also help cleanse the air, with reports of English ivy tackling up to 78 percent of airborne mould.”
When it comes to picking a fern for the bathroom, some will thrive better than others, with Boston ferns and Bird’s nests ideal.
Some will require more humidity than others, but in general, this houseplant makes a great addition to a bathroom.
The pros added: “Ferns require proper and regular drainage but thrive in humidity, and so experts suggest hanging ferns within the shower to get daily quench of thirst.”
According to the experts, Venus fly traps will thrive in bathrooms, even though they need a little extra care than other plants.
The bathroom pros continued: “Their soil requires regular watering, but the moisture in the air makes the bathroom a perfect environment for nourishing a venus fly trap’s leaves.
“Although, as with the cacti, these plants won’t last long in a windowless room, as they require indirect sunlight.”
