When the weather permits, many people flock to their outdoor spaces to make the most of the sun and to crack a bottle of something yummy open with friends.

However, if your garden is teeming with flies, it can really kill the mood - especially if your guests are constantly swatting the pests away from their faces in disgust.

It can be tough to know what to do to get rid of the flies, and you may be inclined to just leave them alone as they’re not in your home.

But one TikToker has shared a hack that’s been “used for years”, to help reduce the amount of critters in the garden. And all you’ll need is a sandwich bag, some water, and a penny.

Sheila Reviews captioned her video: “This outdoor hack has been used for years but I'm not sure why it works. Ziploc bag, water and a penny keep the flies at a minimum.”

She said: “When you’re getting ready to have an outdoor event just place it throughout your yard and it keeps the flies at a minimum.”

Sheila admitted that her neighbour told her about the hack, saying she’d been “doing it ever since”.

She then asked “scientists” on TikTok to tell her why the method works - and the theories came thick and fast. Someone joked: “Because the flies feel that we are poor because we only have a penny so they fly away.”

Another hilariously penned: “It must be witchcraft”. But the real reason? The “reflection”.

It’s simple light refraction going through the bag of water that confuses the housefly - so one person in the comments argued that you didn’t even need the penny to make it work.

“You don’t need the penny at all. Just water in a clear plastic bag or bottle. The fly will see a bigger insect. Is just the reflection”, someone explained.

Others said that they needed a hack to keep mosquitoes away, and many agreed because they’re not only pesky, but can leave painful, itchy bites. Someone added: “Wow this is so interesting”.
