Weeds are a common problem for gardeners, as these pesky plants can steal vital nutrients, light, and water from other plants.

While there are many chemical weed killers available, some gardeners prefer organic remedies that are safe for both the environment and pets.

One such organic solution, shared by gardening expert Jill Nystul, uses just two simple household items - white vinegar and salt - combined with a small amount of washing-up liquid to effectively fight off weeds.

This homemade weed killer is not only inexpensive but also easy to prepare and use.

To make the solution, add two cups of white vinegar, two tablespoons of salt, and one teaspoon of washing-up liquid to a spray bottle.

Replace the spray top and shake gently to mix the ingredients thoroughly.

Once mixed, spray the solution directly onto the weeds as soon as they appear in your garden.

Jill Nystul, the creator behind the home and lifestyle website OneGoodThingJillee, advises gardeners to be cautious when using this solution.

"You need to be careful not to overspray," Jill warns, as the mixture can damage surrounding grass or plants.

She suggests applying the solution on a warm, sunny day for the best results.

The ingredients in this homemade weed killer each play a crucial role in combating weeds.

The acetic acid in white vinegar works by burning the weed on contact and lowering the pH of the surrounding soil, making it difficult for the weed to survive.

Salt is effective at drawing out moisture from the weeds, particularly on a sunny day, helping to dehydrate and kill them.

Washing up liquid helps the solution adhere better to the weeds, preventing it from dripping off or evaporating too quickly.

For those looking for additional methods to manage weeds organically, Jill suggests using physical barriers or boiling water.

"Weeds need sunshine and air to grow," she explained.

By covering weeds with materials like newspaper, landscape fabric, or organic mulch, gardeners can deprive them of sunlight and air, causing them to die off naturally.

Alternatively, boiling water can be used for weeds growing in cracks on sidewalks or driveways.

Simply boil a kettle of water and pour it directly onto the weeds to kill them instantly.
