Special broccoli can help beat chronic disease
A “SUPER” broccoli can help fight chronic diseases from Type 2 diabetes to heart disease.
Researchers have found that eating the vegetable, packed with a health-boosting compound called glucoraphanin, is able to “re-tune” cellular processes which can trigger the deadly conditions.
It can also help fight obesity and some cancers.
Scientists at the Institute of Food Research in Norwich created the super-strength variety called Beneforte in 2010. It is available from some supermarkets for around £1 for 240g.
Now, further research has shown how it works to fight major diseases by helping people’s metabolism work better. The study is published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.
Prof Richard Mithen, of the IFR, said: “Although this is a pilot study, we think it is significant because it shows in humans a real, measurable effect on our metabolism.”
Catherine Collins, principal dietitian at St George’s Hospital, London, said: “It adds to the evidence that cruciferous vegetables benefit health and possibly reduce the risk of chronic conditions.”
