A savvy woman has been hailed a hero for revealing her spider-repelling technique and claims it's a fail-safe way to keep the critters out.

Lucy Kalice, who turned to social media to demonstrate how she keeps unwanted spiders at bay, racked up a whopping 121,000 likes in no time.

In her TikTok clip, she explains: "If you're someone who hates spiders then this video is for you. I'm trying out spider-proofing my house with tea tree oil. Apparently, you're meant to use peppermint oil but I didn't have any to hand - but tea tree oil does the same job."

In the video, Lucy dabs the oil on a cotton pad and then diligently cleans around her doors and windows. She says: "I did the back door, the front door, and then I moved onto the windows. You may or may not know, it's actually spider season at the moment. I'm getting reminded daily about this and there are spiders popping up everywhere. Hopefully, this will work."

Pest UK, experts in creepy crawlies, confirm that autumn is prime time for spiders to seek refuge inside homes, looking for cosy corners.

They support Lucy's household trick, agreeing on their site: "Strong smells are a natural way to deter spiders from entering your home. Smells such as lemon, lime, oranges, and anything with a strong citrus aroma, help repel spiders. Also, eucalyptus oil, tea tree oil, or peppermint oil.

"Vinegar is another potent aroma that can deter spiders, but not everyone fancies the smell of vinegar wafting through their home. To keep those eight-legged intruders at bay, it's suggested to rub or spray areas like window sills and doorways with these scents.

Reacting to Lucy's video, one viewer shared: "Tea tree oil washing up liquid and water in a spray bottle works every time - best thing ever for spiders." Another chimed in: "Yesterday I saw four in the same area of the living room in the space of 15 minutes, one was bigger than the palm of my hand. I wish I was exaggerating."

Meanwhile, a third person commented: "Every strand of hair tickle on my face or neck instantly makes me think there is a spider on me." Yet another added: "I did this and mopped my whole house with peppermint oil after having two monsters in my house." And one more person said: "I dealt with four monstrous spiders and ordered oil for next-day delivery. I have had enough."
