Women with a preference for more intelligent partners are less likely to show interest in male-dominated careers, the study published in the Journal of Applied Social Psychology found.
The research builds upon previous findings about women’s attitudes towards in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) and romance aspirations.
These previous studies found that there was an incompatibility between romantic and intelligence goal pursuits for women.
However this new research from the University of Buffalo focused on the women’s romantic aspirations and how it affected their attitudes to STEM careers.

She addeed: "On the other hand, it could be a process they're not even conscious of. It could be an automatic reaction."
According to the WISE campaign, British women made up only 14 percent of STEM occupations in 2015.
The lowest presence of female workers occurred in skilled trades, engineering and IT professions.
The study also found that women were more willing to date a more intelligent partner than men.
