Cleaning hack: TikTok user shares method for carpet cleaning
While they may not look dirty, carpets can attract greasy residue and dirt, as well as being home to thousands of bacteria.
According to Johanna Constantinou, brand communications director at Tapi, there are several ways to keep carpet and hard flooring clean.
The expert told Express.co.uk: “As a starting point, one of the best ways to keep your floors clean is by ensuring you have a doormat, as these can remove more than 60 percent of the dirt from your footwear, before you’ve even stepped into your home.
“Just give them a good shake regularly to get rid of any dirt build up. Also, just ensure that if you have a doormat inside on top of a smooth floor, your doormat doesn’t have a rubber backing as some of these can transfer stains.
“In terms of carpets, the best way to keep these clean is to vacuum regularly. How often you do it depends on how much you use each room in your home.

“As a general rule of thumb, you should get your vacuum out at least once a week. If you have softer, fluffier carpets, we’d recommend you vacuum twice a week to keep them looking their best.”
The expert also said that house dust can build up in rooms which aren’t even used, meaning giving them a quick going over is also important.
It is also worth bearing in mind the type of carpet you have before vacuuming them, according to the pro.
Johanna explained: “If you have a loop pile carpet, also known as a Berber carpet, use the suction only head on your vacuum.

“However, if you have a cut pile, which is the most common carpet type and includes a twist and saxony, you’re best using a beater brush head on your vacuum.”
Keeping your carpet clean not only makes a home more appealing, but it also extends the lifespan of the carpet.
This also means tackling stains as soon as they appear is important if Britons want to have the best chance at getting rid of them.
Removing stains again depends on the type of carpet, especially depending on the type of cleaning solution going to be used, according to the pro.

She added: “Scoop or scrape up any solids from your spillage, ensuring that you’re working from the edges to the centre of the stain.
“Blot up the spill with a white towel or tissue paper, again working from the outside in. Apply a carpet cleaner, just make sure it is suitable for your fibre type.
“Before you apply it, it’s worth testing it on an inconspicuous area of the carpet. If you’re happy with your solution, then apply this to a white cloth and blot the area.
“Do not scrub and do not apply the carpet cleaner directly to the carpet. Repeat with clean water to remove any residue and repeat until the cleaning agent is removed.”
Dry the area with a white, clean cloth and then vacuum before unveiling your stain-free carpet or rug.
