The stains are often yellow but they can sometimes be brown, green or orange depending on what caused the staining.

With this in mind, Mrs Hinch fans have shared their go-to method for removing toilet seat stains and what the probable cause of the staining is.

Steve Davies asked the Facebook group, 'Mrs Hinch Cleaning Tips': "What can I use to get yellow stains from a toilet seat?"

The post was inundated with responses but most social media users suggested the issue was using bleach.

Instead, they suggested using bicarbonate of soda, either by itself or with white vinegar.

Anne Boulton said: "Bicarbonate of soda and white vinegar. Bleach makes it worse."

Christine Manterfield agreed and wrote: "I’ve also used this method too. Also just toothpaste."

Lesley Calder commented: "Bleach is the culprit. If you have put bleach down the loo and closed the lid. Never been able to remedy."

Audrey Brook said: "I find that bleach with the seat down causes it to go yellow. Always leave the seat and lid up when using bleach."

Sandra May suggested: "Bicarbonate of soda and lemon juice. Mix to a paste, spread over the area and leave as long as possible. And wipe off."

Baking soda can be bought from most supermarkets or online for as little as 65p.

Other suggestions from Mrs Hinch fans included using Bar Keepers Friend, Pink Stuff and shaving foam.

Susan 'Tilly' Davies wrote: "Bar Keepers Friend absolutely brilliant stuff!"

Susan Dillon said: "Pink Stuff and a soft scourer."

Lisa Lawson suggested: "Use shaving foam, old style not gel, spray some on stains and leave for an hour or so. Wipe off. Worked for me and I’d tried everything!"
