Grout is the seal lines between tiles that can quickly become stained, discoloured and unsightly, but there is a very easy way to keep them clean.

Tiles are often in kitchens and bathrooms where they become dirty as they are high-traffic areas in the home where food, grease, and soap splatters are an everyday occurrence.

However, you do not need to use bleach or other chemicals as not only is it harsh to clean with but it can cause the grout to discolour even more due to the material it is made out of.

Bren Did, a natural cleaning expert, has shared she has a “magic” grout cleaner recipe after trying out many different homemade solutions to discover the best one.

She said: “There were so many cleaning recipes available, I was unsure which to pick. I decided to test the 10 most popular DIY grout cleaners online to find the best homemade grout cleaner.”

Bren used her tried and tested method to discover the best way to clean grout is using three simple natural items: baking soda, hydrogen peroxide and dish soap.

She said: “Baking soda is mildly abrasive so it helps to remove the dirt that is stuck in the porous grout surfaces without causing any damage.

“Hydrogen peroxide is a natural alternative to bleach that brightens and eliminates germs. Plus it is non-toxic and decomposes into water and oxygen.”

Dish soap has been designed to be able to easily clean grease away which makes it perfect to get rid of acidic food splatters and grease in kitchens plus the oils and soap stains in bathrooms.

How to clean grout

All you need to do is mix 110g of baking soda, 60ml of hydrogen peroxide and roughly 10ml of dish soap to make the grout cleaner.

Pour the solution in between the tiles on the grout and allow it to sit for five to 10 minutes before you begin scrubbing.

Once the time is up, use a small firm brush such as a toothbrush on the grout lines to scrub away the solution and the dirt should easily wipe away.

Bren said: “Grout is porous meaning it has minute spaces or holes that liquid can pass through.

“These tiny spaces are great traps for dirt and grime. Scrubbing grout with small firm brush will loosen this dirt making it easier to mop or wipe up.”

After scrubbing the grout clean, use a broom to sweep up any excess baking soda and then either mop the floor or rinse the tiles with a wet cloth using hot soapy water.

Your tiles should now be “amazingly clean” according to Bren, who says this handy cleaning solution not only works on grout but is fantastic in other areas of the home.

She said: “I love using the cleaning combo of baking soda and hydrogen peroxide! It’s in my DIY Natural All-Purpose Cleaner that works great for all types of household cleaning and is perfect for laundry stain removal.”
