Facebook charge UK users over £10 to message celebrities such as Tom Daley
SOCIAL networking site Facebook is thinking of charging it's users to message celebrities in a bid to stop fans from bombarding the famous.
The popular website has introduced the fees for 10 per cent of British users as a trial at the end of last month with the plan to introduce it to all members of Facebook in the country.
However, although that may shock the majority of Britain, who love using Facebook on a daily basis, it may offend the celebrities even more when they discover that their price is set depending on how famous they are.
The likes of Tom Daley, who is heartthrob to many teenage girls in the country, can be messaged for a total of £10.68, while other famous faces cost just 71p to be messaged - such as Miranda Hart and Louis Theroux.
According to the Mail Online: "The fee structure is decided by a mathematical formula that takes into account a number of factors, including the number of followers a user has on Facebook and how many messages they receive."
And although fans of the site are going to be somewhat disappointed if the charges are introduced permenantly, Facebook has defended it's latest plan.
"The system of paying to message non-friends in their Facebook inbox is designed to prevent spam, while acknowledging that sometimes you might want to hear from people outside your immediate social circle," they said.
"We are testing a number of price points in the UK and other countries to establish the optimal fee that signals importance. Part of that test involves charging higher amounts for public figures, based on the number of followers they have. This is still a test and these prices are not set in stone."
