Netflix update could finally give fans their most wanted feature
NETFLIX could finally let binge-watchers download its massive catalogue of movies and television shows for offline viewing.
Netflix is open-minded about the possibility of offline viewing for its subscribers
An update to video on-demand giant Netflix could give fans the feature they've been waiting for – offline playback.
Until now, the hugely-successful streaming service has only allowed users to access the thousands of films and boxsets via an internet connection.
But that could be about to change.
The US firm has confirmed it is open-minded about the possibility of offline video playback, so you could download a few episodes of your favourite show ready for a long haul flight, or morning commute.
That's quite a change in tune – especially when Netflix previously vigorously denied that it would offer the ability to view offline.
Netflix CEO Reed Hastings told investors the company was open to offline playback
Amazon recently added the ability to download any of its Prime Instant Video catalogue for offline viewing and broadcaster Sky offers the ability to download and watch on up to four devices withs its Sky Go service.
Quizzed about Netflix's stance on offline viewing during a recent earnings call, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings said he was open-minded about the possibility.
"We should keep an open mind on this," Mr Hastings said.
"We've been so focused on click-and-watch and the beauty and simplicity of streaming. But as we expand around the world, where we see an uneven set of networks, it's something we should keep an open mind about."
The change of heart could be down to increased competition from other media streaming services.
BBC iPlayer, Sky, Apple and Amazon all allow movies to be taken on the move and Netflix may now realise they have to follow the trend.
Netflix new subscriptions slow
Netflix recently announced that some of its content is getting a stunning HDR makeover (that you'll probably never see it).
High Dynamic Range is the latest innovation to hit TVs making content appear brighter, sharper and more rich with colour.
Some Netflix content will now be streamed in this new format.
