An area popular with swimmers in Wolvercote Mill Stream at Port Meadow, Oxford, and a coastal area in the Isle of Wight, have been put forward for bathing water status in a consultation yesterday, said the government.
If accepted, the water quality would be regularly tested for safety, with ministers ordering improvements if minimum standards were not met.
Sewage Free Thames, the group that applied for the bathing status in Oxford, said: "We love our rivers However, they are in a poor state."

Bathing water status, it said, would "prevent sewage spills and improve water quality".
