Prince Andrew has lived at Royal Lodge for 20 years but pride is keeping him from moving on, according to royal biographer Andrew Lownie.

Last year, King Charles agreed that Andrew could stay in the royal residence as long as he took care of the maintenance.

This followed reports suggesting the brothers were at loggerheads about the Duke of York's continued stay at the residence.

Express.co.uk also revealed in May that Andrew will fork out £20,000 on an external paint job and repairs for his residence and that he is determined to stay put.

But Lownie thinks there is more to it.

He told Daily Express US: “I think the real story is behind-the-scenes, because the fact is that Andrew has a lease, and can’t be evicted, he’s bought it, he’s paid for the upkeep.

“If he went, he would get some money back, there are financial reasons for him to go, but his pride is keeping him there.”

When asked to elaborate on how pride was keeping Andrew put, Lownie added: “He feels that someone as a senior royal he is entitled to this sort of prestige of a house like Royal Lodge.”

He believes things were different when Queen Elizabeth II was still alive, because she protected Andrew, but now that Charles wears the crown, things have changed.

Charles prefers a slimmed down monarchy, and it doesn’t look good having a non-working royal living n a 32-room mansion, says the acclaimed author.

It’s believed, the plan is for the Wales family to move in, but this is yet to be confirmed

Andrew inherited the lease from his grandmother, the Queen Mother, and moved into Royal Lodge in 2004. His ex-wife, Sarah Ferguson, joined him in 2008.
