Storm as foreign murders freed
FOREIGN killers have been freed on to Britain’s streets despite Government pledges to deport them, it emerged yesterday.
Conservatives said Gordon Brown’s promise to remove foreign criminals had been exposed as a “sham”.
The Government admitted in July that three foreign prisoners serving a mandatory life sentence – which is only imposed for murder – had been released from jail.
But Justice Secretary Jack Straw has now confessed that none of the three, from Ireland, India and Pakistan, was deported. Only one was made to live in a secure hostel and the other two were released into “alternative accommodation”.
Shadow Justice Secretary Dominic Grieve said: “These revelations raise serious questions for Jack Straw and Home Secretary Alan Johnson. Why were they released and not deported? Why was only one of the three released into secure premises? Have any re-offended since their release in 2007?”
Last year Mr Brown said Labour was “serious about removing people who have no right to be in Britain”.
