Migrants' job row
HOME Secretary Alan Johnson’s latest attempt to curb immigration was last night dismissed as “fantasy”.
The Cabinet Minister announced firms have to advertise vacancies in Britain for a month before offering jobs overseas to migrants.
He also vowed to tighten the restrictions for skilled migrants.
Officials said it will cut the number of migrants from outside the EU given UK work permits by around 10 per cent.
But it sparked a row over Labour’s promise to protect “British jobs for British workers” while running an open-door policy. Tory Shadow Immigration Minister Damian Green said: “The idea this would cut work permits by 10 per cent is just a fantasy figure. The way to control work permits is to have an annual limit.”
