Rubbish piles up in bin strike
MOUNTAINS of rubbish are piling up across one of Britain’s biggest cities as a binmen’s strike nears its third week.
More than 500 refuse and street cleaning workers have vowed to strike “indefinitely”.
There are concerns in Leeds that a public health risk will escalate unless a settlement is reached soon.
It follows a bitter dispute over plans to cut binmen’s salaries by up to £6,000 following the introduction of equal pay legislation.
The council is slashing their salaries to bring them into line with lesser-paid employees.
Workers crossing picket lines have received physical and verbal abuse.
House windows are said to have been smashed, car tyres slashed and a threatening phone call was made to council leader Richard Brett.
