Island’s £880,000 rubbish
HOUSEHOLD waste from Skye is being transported 200 miles to a rubbish tip at an estimated cost of £880,000 a year.
The island’s landfill facility closed in March, 2007, as sending the rubbish to a site near Falkirk was cheaper.
Environmental services chairman John Laing said almost 8,000 tons were transferred last year and added that a better local solution is needed.
Suggestions to curb the amount of waste transported include the possibility of burning it at an Energy from Waste (EfW) plant, which would provide heat to local properties.
Consultants are expected to report early next year and a site near Portree has been proposed.
Matthew Elliott, of the TaxPayers’ Alliance said: “Taxpayers will be distressed their money is being spent in this way.”
