Bombs kill two soldiers
TWO BRITISH soldiers died yesterday after they were fatally wounded in separate explosions while on patrol in Afghanistan.
A soldier from 2nd Battalion The Rifles was killed by a bomb blast while on a foot patrol in central Helmand province yesterday afternoon.
Another soldier, from 2nd Royal Tank Regiment, died in hospital in Birmingham from wounds sustained in an explosion on Saturday.
He was airlifted back to Britain after being caught in the blast while travelling in a Viking vehicle on patrol in Helmand.
Their deaths brought the British toll in Afghanistan since operations began in 2001 to 216, including 46 since the start of July.
Roadside bombs have been responsible for the majority of British deaths in Afghanistan in recent months.
Lieutenant Colonel Nick Richardson, spokesman for Task Force Helmand, praised both “brave soldiers” and said they made the “ultimate sacrifice”.
