Job hunt that took 26 years
JOB hunter John Evans has finally found one – after a 26-year search.
He lost his post as a clerk at a steel plant in 1983. Since then he has applied for more than 300 jobs and gained a string of CV-boosting qualifications.
Now the 46-year-old’s determination has finally paid off after nearly three decades on the dole during which he “went on more courses than Nick Faldo”.
He takes up his new post as a care assistant at a nursing home for the elderly on Monday.
John, of Swallownest, near Sheffield, suffered from epilepsy and lost his clerk’s job when he was 20. “My story makes society today hold its head in shame. People on disability benefits are written off for life,” he said.
He added: “I had self-belief that if I kept on applying, however long it took, I would get a job.”
