‘Disgust’ at Libya training
A DECISION to help train Libya’s police force will “anger and disgust” police officers who are still seeking justice over the death of a colleague, say union bosses.
The warning comes days after the Government allegedly agreed not to try the suspected killer of WPC Yvonne Fletcher in Britain.
The officer was shot 25 years ago during a protest outside the Libyan embassy in London.
Her death, four years before the Lockerbie bombing, sparked an 11-day siege and a diplomatic rift.
The warning by Paul McKeever, chairman of the Police Federation, follows revelations that Jacqui Smith sanctioned the training scheme while she was Home Secretary, as did the Foreign Office.
He said: “I find it incredible that they have been so naive and insensitive.
“It will anger and disgust officers who believe Libya should and could be more active in securing the arrest of WPC Fletcher’s killer.”
