Crucifix-row nurse moved
A DEVOUT Christian nurse who was ordered to remove her crucifix for health and safety reasons has been forced out of her job on the wards.
Distraught Shirley Chaplin decided she had no choice but to accept an administrative job while lawyers challenge the hospital’s decision. They claim the hospital makes concessions for other religions.
Devout Mrs Chaplin, 54, had worn her small silver crucifix since joining Royal Devon & Exeter hospital more than 30 years ago. But just eight months from retirement, bosses ordered her to remove the necklace in case a patient grabbed her by the neck.
She would have lost her job and her pension had she not agreed to accept the move.
