Britons fork out £20k on gardens
HOME OWNERS shell out nearly £20,000 on their garden over a lifetime, a study found yesterday.
Each year they spend £301.23 keeping the lawn, flowerbeds, shrubs, trees and plants in tip-top condition – adding up to a staggering £7,943.31.
Another £2,681.88 goes on tools, £2,619.84 on items including patio heaters and hanging baskets and £3,116.40 just on compost.
It adds up to £18,224.65 over an average 60.5 years.
But it seems the investment is worth it because nearly half the 3,000 polled by Honda Lawn & Garden products say their garden is the best selling point.
It also found one in four Britons are more proud of their garden than any other part of their home.
Honda spokesman Martin Moll said: “This is an incredible amount of money and I doubt many home owners have any idea they are spending this much on their garden. But the garden is one of the key features people look at when buying a house.”
