Auschwitz sign is found
A TWISTED collector who coveted owning a macabre piece of history may be behind the theft of the Auschwitz sign.
The motif spelling out Arbeit Macht Frei – Work Sets You Free – was recovered on Sunday, two days after it was stolen.
Investigators are trying to find who might have ordered the theft of the motif that hung above the entrance to Auschwitz, the notorious Nazi death camp in Poland. They speculate that the fact it was cut into three pieces and discovered in the port city of Gdynia indicates it was about to be smuggled out of the country on a container ship.
Polish RMF FM radio quoted a police source as saying that a “mad collector” could have been behind the crime.
Five men with records for robbery and violence were arrested after a phone tip-off from someone seeking the £23,000 reward for the sign’s return.
